Mike Patton on a Bob Dylan tribute album
Mike Patton is doing vocals on a new Tzadik release: Jamie Saft Trio – Trouble (The Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan). “Jamie Saft and his dynamic trio presents a sparkling interpretation of the work of Bob Dylan. A lifelong Dylan enthusiast, Saft is the perfect man to take on this challenging project and his choice of compositions, spanning over four decades of activity, is as creative as the arrangements themselves. Featuring several guest vocalists including Mike Patton and Antony, this is a deep and meaningful tribute to one of the world’s greatest living songwriters, a Jew whose influence resounds in the work of several generations of pop musicians.”

There is no project of Patton’s that I would view with a more discriminating eye. Don’t half-ass this. This could be lovely.

Anyone know anything more about the Patton track?

I believe that he sings on the track “Ballad Of A Thin Man”
Tried to find sound clips online earlier today, but the only ones I came up with were instrumental parts of the song with no vocals.

Why does a person’s religion have to do with anything? “…a Jew whose influence resounds in the work of several generations of pop musicians”. I mean really! That comment seemed so out of place and forced it isn’t funny!

Craig:
I think Tzadik records mainly release music by jewish artists (mainly, not exclusively). They’ve released a series of albums called Great Jewish Music, so although I agree that that comment sounds a bit wierd, and really who gives a damn about Dylan’s religion, at least it’s not meant in a negative way.

Yes i read that comment twice while i pondered the point of mentioning it. But Olof has a good point…still seems way out of place heh…

Would you have been as bothered by it if it read “a christian who’s influence resounds…” or “a muslim who’s influence resounds…”
The word Jew is not supposed to be a negative thing… and it was simply being pointed out because Tzadik has an interest in, and supports Jewish artists.

Tzadik is a hebrew letter, and can also mean “Saint”.

Bought this track on iTunes last night. Not really impressed. Sounds like another situation where Patton spent an hour learning the song and then just recorded it. His vocals are not my favorite on this track, and at times his singing is simply obnoxious (I think that is what he was going for.. but I don’t like it).
I will give it a few points for being a little different.. but it is not my favotire of his work on other’s albums.
Curious to see what others think of it. Who knows.. maybe it will grow on me over time.
