Billy Gould Update

A four-minute video interview with former FAITH NO MORE bassist Billy Gould about his current stint as the touring guitarist for the German heavy rock/noise trio HARMFUL has been posted online at this location: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoID=2018072798.

Gould last year finished producing HARMFUL’s follow-up to their “Sis Masis” album (2005) at Blubox Studios in Troisdorf, Germany. Entitled “7″, the CD was released in February.

Commented Billy: “Originally, I decided to produce the band because I liked the music. Once we began working together, I realized that we had a lot in common, musically speaking. I think I can actually make a positive contribution here. What excites me about the band is the fact that it is straight-up with no pretense, while managing at the same time to throw in some beautifully twisted chord progressions. I haven’t done anything like this for almost 10 years, so this will be an adventure for me too, and isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about? Besides, this is a great band, and if my involvement helps them to expand beyond Germany, then it’s totally worth the effort.”

I wonder if it sounds like his coop work with Fear Factory on the transgression CD or if it is more influential stuff, am gonna pay attention on this work, always glad by hearin some new music from Billy…

Harmful is a great band. i’d liken them to a slicker version of Queens of the Stoneage. as Billy mentioned, they are a straight up no-nonsense rock outfit.

even QOTSA veers into some experimental stuff now and again.

i didnt enjoy “7″ as much as some of their previous albums, but its good nonetheless.

Harmful are going to support the German punk/rock band Beatsteaks:
    14.05. Frankfurt
    15.05 Augsburg
    16.05 Rottweil

Unfortunately all shows seem to be sold out!!!!!!!!!

    see: http://www.beatsteaks.com

    that’s a pretty spot-on comparison, and exactly why I didn’t like 7.

queens without their rough edge (queens without nick in other words) are incredibly dull. harmful just take that one step further. they sound sterile, lifeless, like they’re aiming at arenas and daytime radio.

    really disappointing stuff.

having said that, if I was in london I’d definitely go to the underworld gig, if only to see the mighty KULTUR SHOCK (also on billy’s label) in support.

now that’s a great band, and sorely under appreciated.

  9. Bashman Says:

Harmful’s okay from what I heard. Pretty straight & uninspiring for the most part but there’s some catchy riffage there. Won’t be buying but I’d still take them over fucking QOTSA.

Billy’s looking well though. Dude’s gone greeeeeyyyy.

Kultur Shock are ace, even if they do sound a bit like a provincial European version of Faith No More.

“a provincial European version of Faith No More”

you say that like it’s a bad thing…that’s the stuff wet dreams are made of.

  11. ms. drac Says:

Whooooa Nickelback should watch out! Somebody is aiming for #1 on the adult contemporary pop/rock charts!

  12. Bashman Says:

    That’s a little harsh… ms. drac

And Portly Jim, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing at all – it’s just something that struck me as peculiar when listening to it. =D

I love the name of their album… We’ve Come To Take Your Jobs or something like that. Hahahaha.

    Bash

  13. portly jim and his bulbous boobs Says:

fair enough…I’ve had the same reaction myself. but not due to their sound so much as their attitude and scope, if you know what I mean.

have you heard the other albums? they’re all magnificent.

  14. Nimmo Says:

Nickelback with a twist of Eddie. Harmful seem to SUCK.

  15. Bashman Says:

Nimmo’s sucking up so blatantly. ;)

I’ve only heard a couple of tracks from their new one. What else do you recommend?

  16. portly jim and his bulbous boobs Says:

    all of it. seriously!

in order of release: ‘fucc the INS’, ‘kultura diktatura’ and ‘we came to take your jobs away’.

start with the new one and work your way backwards.

  17. Nimmo Says:

I suck up to No one!!! Dopey.

  18. five hundred Says:

Saw Harmful live and they just punished the room, the sound was so huge and they’re unbelievably tight and play way heavier than the record would lead to believe, one of the best shows i’ve seen in ages and I wasn’t overly hot on the songwriting on the new record. Hardly nickelback anything, nickelback can’t push a 45 minute set because Kroegers voice can’t hold up any longer, oh yeah and the lyrics are far better than Chad’s “I like your pants around your shoes” bullshit.
