“A Perfect Place” Trailer & Changes to the Site
Alan Smithee left a comment on the last post that said:
The trailer for Perfect Place, and you can hear some of Mike’s Soundtrack.

This brings up an issue I see a lot. People post cool things they’ve found in the comments of completely unrelated articles. So unless you read through all the comments, you miss most of the “new” news that I haven’t either heard about or just not got around to posting.
I converted CV from a custom built web app to a standard blog to encourage a community so people could write their own stories and submit them. However, I can’t just leave it open for anyone to publish unmoderated due to the obvious spam that would soon take over the blog. Plus, honestly I just don’t have time anymore to check every submission, especially when WordPress doesn’t even notify me when I something to moderate. So I have been struggling with what to do with CV lately. Should I just kill it? Do people even really care anymore? The bands that CV was supposed to be about are long dead anyway.
But I was fortunate to grab a short domain name, so unless I get offered an ungodly amount of money, I have no plans of getting rid of it, so what to do with the cv.org web space? I could create a site for my canned vegetable collection, but that doesn’t seem all that interesting either.
The other day I had an idea. What about a setup like Digg? Allow people to post whatever they want, completely unmoderated, and then people vote on the stories to promote them or bury them if they are inaccurate or just plain crap. Plus, it would allow people to easily link to and promote their own sites. It would be take the burden off me and allow the CV community to control what they find cool and interesting. I think that would solve a lot of the problems and once again give CV a purpose. I’ve always wanted CV to be a community driven site and I think this may be the best solution.
So I think that’s what I’m going to do. In a few days, I will take this blog down (and archive it somewhere) and replace it with a community publishing system. Let’s see how that works. If it bombs, I can always fall back to my canned vegetables idea.
Update: I’ve decided against the community voting route. This site just doesn’t have enough traffic for that to really work. So I’m going to keep the blog going. I found some old stuff I thought was long deleted that used to be hosted here, so maybe I’ll get some of that back up here before long.

I think the idea of a user-driven website to be not only pragmatically, but also otherwise a good idea. Perhaps something like a wiki format?
I would be sad to see CV go away, no matter how nice your canned vegetable collections is. Although it is true that “the bands that CV was supposed to be about are long dead anyway,” this is really the last thing I have to hold on to–
February 8th, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Yeah, I forgot to mention the wiki idea. I was thinking about that for general info about the bands and members. A lot of that is already collected on Wikipedia now, but I can still see a benefit to having it on this site as well. So adding a wiki would probably be the next phase, but the user-driven news would still be what would appear on the front page.
February 8th, 2008 at 1:10 PM
Please don’t get read of CV….it’s hard to keep track of patton’s side projects, so I really rely on this site to hear about album releases and tours and such. User Driven-Digg style is worth a try. Like you said, if it bombs….it can always be changed again.
February 8th, 2008 at 1:52 PM
I am perfectly fine with a user driven site as long as the content remains about what CV is fundamentally about. This site has always been about Faith No More, Bungle, and all of the side projects that have been connected to that original idea. I’d hate to see the site turn into a generic “music news” site about bands no one really cares about.
I come to CV to keep up on Patton’s projects and other news related to former band members of FNM, etc. As long as it still has that focus, I’ll continue to visit, regardless of what format it is in.
BTW, I love the idea of a CV Wiki. There’s PILES of stuff we could put in there.
February 8th, 2008 at 5:27 PM
“Digging it” would be worst than selling it to spammers. I’ve been reading CV for a lot time now, it would be sad to see it go that way.
What if you give access to some (two-three) reliable admins to filter all crap and continue to let us know news about our own God? You just need some help and content, that’s it.
I don’t like change. I don’t need hundreds of Patton news, one once in a while is OK for me. I like CV because is the source for Patton news.
February 8th, 2008 at 9:27 PM
Just to clarify, whatever I do, CV would still be what it’s always been about. CV is not a “Patton site” per se, but my general filter rule is that the news and information should be about one of the members of either Faith No More or Mr. Bungle. It just happens that Mike Patton is the common link between the bands and he has been a lot busier than everyone else in recent years. I would love it if there were more news about the other members of these bands.
February 9th, 2008 at 3:57 AM
Agreed - as every big fan will tell you, FNM and Bungle are special kind of bands and cv has served as a special kind of place. The news (even though it has slowed down a lot) has been invaluable to myself, and I’m sure to many others. One important thing is the non-Patton factor, and maybe this could be looked at. Patton, of course, is profiled elsewhere and news gets around (and there’s ipecac.com of course) but it is hard to keep track of everyone else this site could relate to. e.g. Billy Gould, I want to know more about that German band and what he’s up to, or, Trey - he must have done more than a couple SC3 albums in the past few years!? A wiki idea would be good to fully catalogue everyone’s musical activities (or even non-musical activities) and maybe we could allow some info and strongly related bands, like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (coz they’re awesome!). Any hoo, I don’t know anything about this Digg thing, but I’m sure the enthusiasm, passion, and general all round geekiness of fans could fuel a site that can make us get more out of cv.org
February 9th, 2008 at 4:12 AM
Okay… another idea! Was thinking about keeping relevance to FNM/Bungle original members. Back when the ipecac message board was booming, I always got great musical reccomendations and such from like-minded folk who were more on top of certain musical areas than me. Also, you’d get more links for the lastest news but also (and this was important as fan) I’d find out cool things I never knew from things in the past, like a collaboration I never knew about, or just that King For a Day was apparently recorded with a $100 guitar (is this true?). So ideas is - if people are posting maybe there could be some kind of rating system, like 1, 2, or 3, where 1 is directly related to FNM/Bungle and 3 is just out there, but under someone’s judgement that people would like to know.
February 9th, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Are there open-source frameworks that would let you implement a Digg-alike pretty quickly? Because that’s a pretty dope idea. I would totally participate in that, even though I’m only following the RSS feed here and never read the comments.
A wiki sounds like a different kind of thing - but there are much smaller, less dedicated communities that have nice, informative and healthy wikis. That seems like more work though.
February 9th, 2008 at 11:42 AM
bister mungle, I certainly agree that it’s great to discover new music through people with similar tastes. In fact SGM is probably one of my favorite bands these days. I just don’t want CV’s news to get watered down to be a generic music news site.
Ipecac’s forum got out of control and it became harder and harder to find any relevant information in all the crap that was posted there. Surprisingly, aside for the occasional attacks from spam bots, the past CV forums I’ve run have been mostly on topic. But I’m not so sure I want to set up another one just because the more forums (meaning different places to talk about something) we have, the less valuable each one becomes.
CV started out as a mailing list and still exists as a mailing list. And even though the traffic has died down on it quite a bit in recent years, it’s a great place to communicate with other fans and discuss similar music and whether KFAD was recorded with a $100 guitar. So I think the primary forum for CV members should remain the mailing list. I don’t have a very prominent link for the mailing list on cv.org anymore, which is a shame. I need to make sure that’s more noticeable. But if you’re not already subscribed, just visit http://lists.cv.org/listinfo.cgi/cv-cv.org.
If you don’t like mailing lists, there is also a CV group on Facebook. Sorry, there is nothing official on MySpace or any other social network. Facebook is the only one I can stand. So if you’re on Facebook, you can visit http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2418401587.
Dan, yes, there is. I wouldn’t have even suggested it if it wasn’t an option.
I do web development for a living, but I am just too busy to write new proprietary software for CV. So I am looking at using a package called Pligg. It has pretty much all the same basic features as Digg (voting, burying, commenting, etc.).
February 9th, 2008 at 5:19 PM
Andy, I’m sure there’s a way we could make the community site AND your canned vegetables idea both work out.
February 10th, 2008 at 10:43 AM
User-Driven data = brilliant idea. People could post anything they thought was related to Mr. Bungle, not limited to its band members. For instance, have you guys heard Darth Vegas?
http://www.mp3.com.au/DarthVegas
February 10th, 2008 at 4:40 PM
I’ve heard good things about pligg. open source social voting software like digg. http://www.pligg.com
something does need to be done about cv, the tumbleweeds have been gathering for a while now. but i definitely don’t want to see it go.
February 10th, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Yeah, something really needs to be done about cv and that user driven site seems like a good idea.
February 10th, 2008 at 8:35 PM
letting this site go in the hands of Patton fans is a bad move…Look at what happened to the bunglefever bbs….fact is, most patton fans are immature morons….I say, since this site was originally about FNM and Bungle it should stay focused on those two bands….They are the best Mike is ever going to do…Maybe have a site for all the old interviews, articles, etc..maybe start a live blogspot where people can share audio live recordings of the band
February 12th, 2008 at 1:31 AM
1) Don’t make or encourage Patton only type thing
2) Partial user driven seems like way to go
3) Archiving sounds good to keep old stuff
***Anything happening with cv.ftp server? Last I checked it was still down…
February 12th, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Severin, the CV FTP site isn’t coming back. Instead, we’ve decided to consolidate everything into the Bungle Fever FTP site. So now you can find the FNM files that used to be on the CV FTP over at ftp://www.bunglefever.com/.
February 12th, 2008 at 11:56 AM
I’m another one who’d be sad to see CV go altogether. Even though, as you say, Bungle and FNM are long dead, the projects of the individual members are both interesting and obscure so sites like this have been great in keeping tabs on them. If it wasn’t for Caca Volante I never would’ve heard of the band Harmful and subsequently met Bill Gould at one of their gigs, nor would I have even heard of half the Tzadik records Patton’s been involved with.
The danger of allowing anyone to submit anything is fairly apparant (the ‘news’ article that precedes this one a good example) but I like the idea of the voting system based on relevance.
Anyway just wanted to let you know there’s another one of us who pokes his head in from time to time.
February 14th, 2008 at 12:29 PM
“The bands that CV was supposed to be about are long dead anyway”
MIKE PATTON WILL NEVER DIE. Unless I’m missing out on some site, this really is the only resource I have to keep up with Patton/Dunn and the rest of the circle. They have quite a few projects that I really want to learn more about. Anyway the digg idea kicks ass. I’ll keep checking back more often than I used to.
February 14th, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Koopa thanks for the heads up dude. All I can say is MOAR!!
February 15th, 2008 at 2:36 AM
I’m just an occasional poster on this site but I think this news item pretty much proves that this site is invaluable.
So I’d love the site to remain in some form but don’t ask me about the proposed changes above because my computer knowledge is basic at best.
I just hope it survives in some form and we can still talk about all things Bungle/FNM related. Maybe a seperate section to talk about other music might be a good idea so we could have a place to talk about FNM/Bungley things and a completely seperate place to talk about other music/general stuff. It might broaden the appeal of th site.
I’ve been interested in hearing some of the stuff from the soundtrack to “A Perfect Place” and this site provides a snippet of the movie and music. I know I wouldn’t have found it otherwise and you’ve made me and some of my Patton-loving friends very happy.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:21 AM
Bister mungle: Yeah, I talked to Trey about the guitar tone on KFAD and it was recorded with his roommate’s $100 japanese knock off les paul. He couldn’t recall the brand but from my guitar knowledge I’m guessing it could have been a Greco or a Hohner built in the 70s, both of these guitars were great quality (guitarist in Dub Trio plays a Greco that’s a Moonstone knock off) but it has to be an older one.
I saw Bill play with Harmful in London and they were clinically tight it was one of the best shows I saw last year. As far as I know the band is taking a bit of a touring break right now according to their website.
Andy: I fired you an email.
February 18th, 2008 at 1:24 PM
do not kill cv! it is the soul of the fans of mr. bungle.. it doesn’t really matter if the bands are dead or not, the guys still live and come up with projects.. besides, someone mentioned Darth Vegas, and there are many others out there that have a strong resemblance to Mr. Bungle and friends.. Dog Fashion Disco, Il Maniscalo Maldestro (probably misspelled =D) so I think having a digg-like space here will be great and the fans will have more opportunity to share stuff!!
February 18th, 2008 at 3:32 PM
hello!
there’s an excellent patton related blog for those who speak spanish at:
http://zemaraim.blogspot.com/
the guy is from chile and updates the blog quite frequently… even if you dont speak spanish, you can find interesting links….
February 18th, 2008 at 11:33 PM
@Hybreda or anyone else ftm please post the names of the bands that sound like Mr. Bungle. I had already stumbled across Dog Fashion Disco and had not heard of Darth Vegas until Koopa mentioned them, thanks btw. Darth Vegas is as addicting as Mr Bungle was back in the day. I only gave a quick listen to http://www.myspace.com/ilmaniscalcomaldestro to these dudes, they sound interesting. I’ll check out more of their stuff when my Darth Vegas seizure subsides.
@alex cool site dude

As much as I loved CV back in the day when it had good info , the CV list was king, and Bungle were the coolest band on the planet, I think its time to move on and bury it. I know everyone likes to keep old stuff but its almost like the generation of it is over.
Faith No More discussion is in the past, Bungle are in the past.
Anything new that is done is just going to be a tacky patton fan club. while patton is king this place was for talking about Puffys thirftiness, billys mexican deathmettlers, roddys her-on, treys temperament, trevors tricks or in other words what the all related people did. Id say you could start something with the best intentions but it will go bad.
If something were to survive I think it would have to steer towards the avant guarde genre, focusing on Patton, Zorn, Ribot, etc and be more like the Zornlist, except without the arrogance. A place to learn about other musics as opposed to what shampoo patton uses
March 11th, 2008 at 4:50 AM
If you do take this site down, it’ll be sad to see it go. CV was probably the first mr bungle-related website I ever found, back in early 1996.
Good luck with all your ventures, Andy.
March 11th, 2008 at 9:20 PM
really man, I’ve looked at this place as the main place for any info when there is some, but it seems it really isn’t the place, and has probably been stagnating my knowledge of any more info. Every so often I come to hear about any tidbits on the members of Faith No More, I don’t really care about the other projects. I don’t read whole threads when the topic isn’t interesting and probably miss out on some good links, so the site is set up real bad. In this topic alone there are two blogs that look interesting that I never knew existed and have more info and posters that talk about Faith No More. I don’t mean to diss this place, but this place seems more like a place to advertise Patton’s projects than to talk about the defunk but not forgotten Faith No More. It should be renamed Patton’s projects, not Faith no More. When there’s some tidbits I’d like to hear about all the members, not just Patton alone. SHAME ON YOU!
March 11th, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Hahaha! Nice comment “Batman”. I have addressed why this site appears to favor Patton many times before, in fact I’ve addressed you directly about it, so I’m not going to do it again.
March 12th, 2008 at 1:16 PM
I’ll miss this site, but it’s time to bury it. We don’t need another cult of Patton fanclub. I’ve checked this site since the mid 90’s, but it was really the only source back then and it has outlived its usefullness.
Still, an archive going back to the 90’s would be good, as well as the old database with all the magazine articles.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:11 AM
patton is the most prolific of all the cv related artists, hence he does seem to dominate in news at times. no big deal. go to the corner batman, have a cry, and move on.
March 15th, 2008 at 9:28 AM
An unmoderated forum where people can post whatever they want….isn’t the what the bunglefever bbs is?
My fear would be the CV related blog would turn into that place.
March 16th, 2008 at 5:31 AM
johnny not sure if you really grasp the concept of a community publishing system ie digg-like system.
March 16th, 2008 at 7:43 AM
ok well my point which I probably forgot to get across is yes I agree the site should be set up differently, digg sys., etc. Maybe then there’d be more traffic coming through and the place would grow (at least a bit anyways). There’s a lot of content out there that can be pulled into this place, maybe about all the members, I don’t know because I’ve been checking here all the time. I know all the member’s projects aren’t that great anymore but I still like to hear any tidbits. Like for example in one of the blogs posted above there’s something about Patton turning 40 and pictures with people hugging him. Now that stuff is more interesting. I bet the other band members have small stuff going on in their lives that haven’t been shared with their fans. And they were always the most open ones in the band.
March 16th, 2008 at 9:42 PM
Did anybody see Mike Patton on Talk Metal? on the Fuse Network? I don’t know if that’s old or not, but I just saw it. He said every member of FNM was a good friend and that he’d reunite with FNM if there was a large amount of money involved. But there was also some disscussion of another new Dan the Automator collaboration. They gave the name of the band, but I can’t remember it off the top of my head. Most of the show was Mike showing off the new Ipecac toys.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:28 AM
No did you just see it on tv or on the net? Hey I got a great idea why don’t we just put all and any news from on now on this thread? Anyway the last I heard him say was that he was open to doing something with the band, that it didn’t mean they had to reform the band but they could do something. Now before this he used to be very anti doing anything with FNM, he would usually say “no way unless there were a whole suitcase of money involved” or something to that effect. So I’m not sure if you saw something old where he was saying the same crap or he was being genuine about that. Anyway I don’t think anyone’s ever gonna offer them a large amount of money so it’d have to be because he realizes all his other projects have been crap all these years and he wants to be involved in a good band again.
March 18th, 2008 at 12:59 PM
i mean.. whatever, it’s his music, he can go back on his word if he wants, it’s his right… however, his exact quote for many years was ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ and that there was nothing left to go back for, ‘why go back? I have so much to look foward to’ ….. i guess that just isn’t the case anymore..
March 24th, 2008 at 1:10 AM
All his other music projects, even those annoying ones, are better than Faith No More.
April 11th, 2008 at 1:23 PM
This whole thread started with your proposed changes to the site. Supposedly to happen “in a few days” from Feb 8. What’s the story, chief?
April 11th, 2008 at 2:36 PM
A “few” is purposefully ambiguous, but perhaps 63 days is pushing the limits of “few”. Well, I did set up Pligg (the Digg-clone software), but after evaluating it, I’m just not sure it’s the right thing to do. Does this site have enough traffic to support it? Most likely not. I just haven’t made up my mind yet. But you can see the completely unmodified default install here: http://www.cv.org/news/.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:36 PM
Good news! Patton is playing on the Holland Festival in Amsterdam with Mondo Cane together with the Metropole Orchestra. Venue Paradiso. Bought 4 tickets. this is gonne be epic
April 15th, 2008 at 1:39 PM
Well whatever you end up deciding, thanks for keeping this thing going for as long as you have. Since finding this site back in ‘93 or ‘94, it’s been the best resource for FNM/Bungle/Patton news. It’s crazy that I first heard FNM 17 years ago. More depressing, actually. I’m going to go jump out my window now and kill my old ass.
April 22nd, 2008 at 6:48 PM
viewing all the home made videos on you tube and seeing footage of Mike when he was 20 yrs younger… makes me feel like an old fart too lol
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:42 AM
Hey, just thought I’d give y’all a heads-up: Ipecac just posted a New Release Update for their upcoming Melvins album. If you go to the Melvins bibliography under Ipecac’s “Artists” page, there’s an announcement for a Melvins/Fantomas Big Band DVD this year!
I was very impressed with quality of the Kaada/Patton DVD but I’ve always thought a Fantomas show could really exploit DVD’s audio potential. I hope this is the start of some kind of trend at Ipecac…would kill to experiance Tomahawk’s Anonymous in 7.1 Souround.

I will put them on ebay by mid may. If you´re interested, send an email zoyd[@]gmx.de
Anyone heard of other Mondo gigs? Desperately waiting for the album. Am singing those crooners under the shower every morning
May 7th, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Andy, please let CV keep on keepin’ on in some form. I’ve been reading it for a loooong time and would hate for it to go away. Pretty much the first thing I did on the internet, ever, was to search for FNM-related stuff and CV is what popped up. That said, some more frequent updates would be cool. Maybe you could recruit some trusted collaborators if you don’t have time to do it yourself, which is understandable.
