Angel Dust Re-released

Levi Peckham just sent this in:

Angel Dust is going to be re-released (and half-speed mastered) on 180g VINYL by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab:

Also limited edition GOLD CD:

Since I believe Angel Dust was an all-analog recording, the half-mastered vinyl should prove to be very faithful to the original tape(s).

Can anyone who might know confirm that Angel Dust was recorded to tape (i.e. not digital)?

Since Matt Wallace produced, engineered and mixed, I think he might know? :)

They have a TBD as a release date…….. I know what TBA means but what does this mean? I’m all over this, both the CD and Vinyl. I tried to buy it but it came up as a pre-release order with no date. Do you know what the date will be? I’ve bought three cd’s of AD due to ruining them buy playing them so much.

Also is there 2 vinyl albums?

    Mike

  3. Andy Says:

TBD = To Be Determined. In other words, they don’t when it will be released.

Yes, the vinyl release is two LPs. Sometimes 180g vinyl is recorded at 45 RPM for enhanced sound quality. This may account for the necessity of two LPs. But if this release is really half-speed mastered, it wouldn’t need to be recorded at 45 RPM in order to achieve enhanced sound quality, but I suppose they could do both.

Sounds cool- almost my fav FNM album.
A hybrid stereo SACD would be a preferable format.

    Patredux,

I know exactly what you mean. I’m halfway through disc no.2 and it will soon be time to get a fresh copy.

One small gripe, however. Why aren’t they doing what happens with most re-issues, i.e, Have a special edition with an additional bonus disc of material (b-sides, unreleased stuff, etc.).

What about releasing the DVD’s of the Angel Dust rehearsals and recordings, obviously polished and edited, as part of the package?

  6. UnSub Says:

At the very least they should put the extra tracks that were released as part of any tour / collector’s editions for Angel Dust. My original tape had 4 extra live tracks, including ‘Epic’ and ‘Be Aggressive’.

  7. Zira Says:

Yeah, they should really put some extra features. Making of Angel Dust would be perfect, I don’t think a lot of people know about it.

  8. Levi Says:

Minimally it would have been nice if the version of “Easy” recorded during the Angel Dust sessions (was there more than one?), and “As the Worm Turns” (I think the version with Patton was also recorded during the AD sessions?) were included. Both were bonus studio tracks on alt. issues of Angel Dust.

Alas, it looks like the MoFi version of AD will reflect the original track list/order.

  9. stripedcat Says:

think the patton atwt is a live version.. but wasy would be great! and making of ad. fun to listen to the songs that could have been, like the monk/seagull shit.
das schutzenfest and let’s lync the landlord was recording during ad right?

  10. Andy Says:

Actually, Patton did record a studio version of “As The Worm Turns”. It was released on the Japanese version of Angel Dust, along with “Easy”.

taken this from the mofi site:

New Numbered Limited Edition Mini-LP-Style Packaging!

-Peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200 chart
-Worldwide sales of 3 million copies to date
-Contains the hit singles “MidLife Crisis”, “A Small Victory” and “Everything’s Ruined”
-Co-produced, engineered and mixed by Matt Wallace (Blues Traveler, Maroon 5)
-Mastered from the original ½”, 2-track, 30 i.p.s. master mixes

MFSL engineers were quite impressed with the dynamic range and natural tonality present on the master tapes. When compared to previous versions, the new MFSL GAIN 2 mastering is much more dynamic, and reveals detail and subtleties not heard on other versions. This new MFSL Gold CD allows the full dynamic range to shine through, giving fans the chance to hear this album the way it was heard at Scream Studios, where mixing was expertly performed by Matt Wallace and David Bryson

I have pre-ordered both the CD and Vinyl also the new Mr Bungle Disco vinyl from the same site, will post link when I get home to the site that is taking pre-orders.

Ohh. August 2008 I have seen in a couple of places.

Wow…Disco Volante is being re-released?! I wonder how the “Platypus” issue is going to be dealt with (i.e. it wasn’t able to be fitted on the original WBR release, so it was put on a separate 7″ along with SC3). And, I wonder if the “secret song” will still be double-grooved?

  15. Fantomasnomore Says:

I guess Platypus (which is one of the greatest tracks I have ever heard) will be on the re-release as it appeared on the UK pressing of the Disco Volante LP

  16. Fantomasnomore Says:

    Note:

It states on the label that it is on the LP but not on the sleeve!!!

I will have to check and let you know as its a long time since I listened to it.

  17. Fantomasnomore Says:

yep, Platypus is on the UK pressing.

  18. david Says:

Is this an official release or a bootleg? I would have thought that any FNM release would have to be thru Rhino/Warners/Which-ever-big-named-company-owns-the-rights-to-the-recordings.

And yes, as far as I can remember AD was recorded onto analogue, then digitally mixed. I don’t have the cd on my person, but on the backcover it bares either the symbols AAD or ADD. AAD meant analogue recording, analogue mixing, digital transfer while ADD was analog recording, digital mixing, and digital transfer. Eitherway, it’s an analogue recording!

A couple of notes on the details of the vinyl re-release listed below:

-While these re-masters may actually have increased dynamic range, and may sound more like the original mixes, mastering is an essential part of the recording process. It is planned for during mixing. Often the compression and EQ applied during mastering are essential to creating the final sound of a record.

-This isn’t to say that this re-release won’t be very cool to listen to, and perhaps provide some insight into the original mixing process. Just that it may not be what the band and producer originally intended. And I say that because…

-I noted that nowhere in the description of the re-release was it mentioned that the band, Matt Wallace, David Bryson, or John Golden were consulted on the re-mastering.

Which doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile to check it out, especially as a fan. I’m just saying that the original mix master tapes aren’t where the artistic part of the recording stopped.

Anyone else got the CD? I just got mine. Listened to it. doesnt sound much different than the original. Have to keep listening though, the changes seem pretty subtle.

  21. vomitgod Says:

I just got it, and upon first listen (on quality earbuds – not at home on the hifi), it sounds very similar to the original release, although it’s not nearly as “bright”. That should make for a less-fatiguing listening overall, but at this point I’m not sure it was worth the $30 I spent on it.

  22. vomitgod Says:

Also just noticed that the liner notes show one “Mike Mordin: Drums”.

Let’s hear it for quality control at MFSL!

  23. Fantomas No More Says:

Subtle differences in sound but nothing to scream about, packaging is a basic cardboard gatefold sleeve with standard Angel Dust lyric insert, images etc… and a useless Mofi insert with what must be a $13 gold cover sticker. The only thing decent about it is the CD “nice black and gold CD” (not multicoloured as on my site, damn scanner).

Just to note on the above topic: it was released through Warner/Rhino/Mofi.

just checked out this remaster. to be honest, theres not a whole lot of improvement but the work they’ve done is noticeable. lots of the high frequencies have been smoothed out and are less distorted. one problem ive noticed is that some songs appear to have had their pitch shifted up. ive made a comparison video and posted it on youtube to illustrate the differences from the two versions.
