Mike Patton & Fennesz Plan More Dates Together / new Dan The Automator Collaboration

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

In-demand weird sound vocalizer Mike Patton and subdued weird sound synthesizer Christian Fennesz will kick off another European tour together tomorrow evening, February 27.

They have four dates together before splitting up for a few solo gigs. Patton’s headlining shows are all with Italy’s Zu, and Fennesz’s are mostly festival dates. Patton fans in Brussels should note that a scheduled gig at VK for March 5 has been cancelled. But the question remains: When are these two gonna show North America some love?

Patton has also been collaborating with Dan the Automator under the name Crudo. The pair will perform at the 2008 Sasquatch! festival, running May 24-26.

Patton & Fennesz:

02-27 Oslo, Norway - Rockefeller
02-28 Sofia, Bulgaria - Universiada Hall
02-29 Warsaw, Poland - Proxima
03-01 Zaandam, Netherlands - De Kade

Patton:

03-02 Geneva, Switzerland - Usine *
03-03 Rome, Italy - Circolo Degli Artisti *
03-04 Turin, Italy - Ossigeno *
03-05 Brussels, Belgium - VK
03-06 Utrecht, Netherlands - Tivoli *
03-07 Verona, Italy - Interzona *
05-24-26 George, WA - The Gorge (Sasquatch!) #

* with Zu

Editor’s Note: This was an old submission I failed to approve.  I realize these dates have all passed. Please accept my apologies while I play catch up.

“A Perfect Place” Trailer & Changes to the Site

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Alan Smithee left a comment on the last post that said:

The trailer for Perfect Place, and you can hear some of Mike’s Soundtrack.

This brings up an issue I see a lot. People post cool things they’ve found in the comments of completely unrelated articles. So unless you read through all the comments, you miss most of the “new” news that I haven’t either heard about or just not got around to posting.

I converted CV from a custom built web app to a standard blog to encourage a community so people could write their own stories and submit them. However, I can’t just leave it open for anyone to publish unmoderated due to the obvious spam that would soon take over the blog. Plus, honestly I just don’t have time anymore to check every submission, especially when WordPress doesn’t even notify me when I something to moderate. So I have been struggling with what to do with CV lately. Should I just kill it? Do people even really care anymore? The bands that CV was supposed to be about are long dead anyway.

But I was fortunate to grab a short domain name, so unless I get offered an ungodly amount of money, I have no plans of getting rid of it, so what to do with the cv.org web space? I could create a site for my canned vegetable collection, but that doesn’t seem all that interesting either.

The other day I had an idea. What about a setup like Digg? Allow people to post whatever they want, completely unmoderated, and then people vote on the stories to promote them or bury them if they are inaccurate or just plain crap. Plus, it would allow people to easily link to and promote their own sites. It would be take the burden off me and allow the CV community to control what they find cool and interesting. I think that would solve a lot of the problems and once again give CV a purpose. I’ve always wanted CV to be a community driven site and I think this may be the best solution.

So I think that’s what I’m going to do. In a few days, I will take this blog down (and archive it somewhere) and replace it with a community publishing system. Let’s see how that works. If it bombs, I can always fall back to my canned vegetables idea.

Update: I’ve decided against the community voting route. This site just doesn’t have enough traffic for that to really work. So I’m going to keep the blog going. I found some old stuff I thought was long deleted that used to be hosted here, so maybe I’ll get some of that back up here before long.

The blog Stereo Warning has an interview with Mike re: working on Peeping Tom, what it would take to get FNM back together and why he doesn’t like Axl Rose, among other things. Read it here.

Server Move

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

We’re packing up and moving everything to a new home. Other the next few days, there may be some downtime here and over at our sister site, Bungle Fever. The move will be done in phases, the first being the Bungle Fever BBS tomorrow night. If things go well, there will only be a few hours of downtime. If things don’t go as well, there will be a couple of days of downtime. If everything screws up, I should have it all back up in a week or so. The goal is to have everything moved, working, and back to normal by August 11th.

Ipecac Recording is no longer hosted on my server and will not be affected by this move.

Peeping Tom’s Debut Numbers

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

The numbers are in. The self-titled debut from Peeping Tom sold 9,559 units in the U.S. for the week. That means the album debuted at #103, just missing the Top 100.

No new releases bowed in the top 100 slots of the Billboard 200. The closest contenders include Mike Patton’s new project, Peeping Tom, entering with its self-titled Ipecac debut (No. 103, 10,000) and Les Claypool’s third solo studio album, “Of Whales and Woe” (Prawn Song), with 8,000 at No. 115 (his best chart position yet).

Billboard Magazine

This is quite a bit better than the last Fantômas album, which sold a little under 6,500 units in its first week for a #158 debut.

On the other side of the planet, Peeping Tom debuted at #12 on the Australian Music charts. I don’t have the exact number of units sold in Australia, but a #12 debut ain’t bad.

In related news, the new Faith No More “You Fat Bastards/Who Cares A Lot?” DVD combo. sold a little under 1,500 units in the U.S. during its first week.

Submitted By: Mr. T (U.S. Charts), Allan Sheard (Billboard Article), & Cory Morton (Australian Charts)

Will the Peeping Tom performance be available online?

Friday, May 26th, 2006

For those who miss it, the Peeping Tom performance tonight on Late Night with Conan O’Brien will be put up on the Ipecac Recordings website, IF they get permission from the show.

Syndication

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

One of the many reasons I switched Caca Volante to use blog software was for syndication. For those of you that use syndication software, you can subscribe to this site using RSS 2.0, RSS 0.92, or Atom 0.3 feeds.

Also, as a hidden benefit of Ipecac Recording using Google Groups for their announcement lists, you can now subscribe to Atom feeds for the lists. There is a feed for the news updates and a feed for the calendar updates.

Ipecac Recordings Announcement Lists

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

The Ipecac Recordings announcement lists are back (for real this time)!

As before, there are two lists. One for news updates and one for calendar updates. Here’s the important part:

We have decided against moving the subscriber list over manually because there are hundreds and hundreds of dead emails in our current subscriber list. So we would like to ask you to resubscribe if you’d like to continue to recieve updates from us. If you have emailed us asking to be unsubscribed from the previous lists, then you don’t need to do anything. You will not receive any future emails from us.

You can (re)subscribe by filling out the form at the top of either the news page, the calendar page, or both!
