Rachel Maddow Mentions Mr. Bungle

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Liberal political commentator, Rachel Maddow, mentioned Mr. Bungle on her MSNBC show yesterday.

She was talking about disambiguation and Wikipedia. If you type in “Vanity Fair,” she says, “You can find an entry on the magazine, or the book… or Mr. Bungle’s Vanity Fair, which isn’t their best work…”

I haven’t found a clip of this online yet, but if someone finds one, please send it along and I’ll attach it to this post.

Many thanks to Steve Hart for providing the context in which the band was mentioned.

Update: Allan Sheard sent over the URL to the video.  The mention comes within the first minute or so.

Avenged Sevenfold Wanted to Cover Mr. Bungle’s “Stubb (A Dub)” But Wasn’t Allowed

Monday, March 30th, 2009

AVENGED SEVENFOLD recently recorded a cover version of the BLACK SABBATH classic “Paranoid” for the new Warner Music Group release “Covered, A Revolution In Sound: Warner Bros. Records”, which came out on February 24. [...] AVENGED vocalist M. Shadows told U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine that the band originally wanted to cover MR. BUNGLE’s 1991 track “Strubb [sic] (A Dub)” for the compilation before settling on“Paranoid”. “We were very excited to cover a song from MR. BUNGLE, but then we were told that there was a list of songs that we could cover, not choose anything Warner’s had put out,” Shadows revealed.

Was this because Warner Bros. still hates Mr. Bungle or just coincidence?

Mike Patton appearing on latest Bär McKinnon project.

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Mike Patton is currently laying down vocals for a track to appear on Bär McKinnon’s newest project. The Melbourne based band called Umläut are currently working on a album touted for release later this year. The word on the street is that the track is mega catchy, combining Mike’s smooth vocals with Bär’s Looney Tunes inspired bent. Bär has been laying low the last couple of years, working on a whole bunch of tunes which are now ready to be heard. Umläut are starting to gig around Melbourne building to the release of the cd, for the second half of 2008.

Secret Chiefs 3 arrange & record John Zorn “Masada Book Two” CD

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Secret Chiefs 3: Xaphan: Book of Angels Volume 9 [#7364]

Spectacular arrangements of Masada compositions by mad alchemist Trey Spruance, mastermind of Secret Chiefs 3 and one of the most brilliant musicians around. Drawing upon an astonishing array of musical styles from Exotica and Surf to Ethiopian Funk and Gypsy Swing, Trey ’s colorful orchestral arrangements perfectly compliment the lyricism and dynamic rhythmic complexity of Zorn ’s evocative Book of Angels. Featuring some of the best musicians from the Bay Area, LA and Seattle scenes, this is one of the most compelling installments in the entire Masada series.

Due out in Fall ‘07 on Tzadik.

The Stone NYC : Sanity check for the scene.

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Editor’s Note: The following post was submitted as a news story. While it appears to be nothing more that an advertisement, I let it be published because The Stone is a great venue if you live in the NYC area. On July 4th, Jai Young Kim performed at The Stone. For those who don’t know, Jai Young is the person responsible for coming up with the name “Caca Volante” back in 1994.

From http://www.thestonenyc.com/: The Stone is a not-for-profit performance space dedicated to the EXPERIMENTAL and AVANT-GARDE.

Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle / Secret Chiefs 3 renown, appearing in a multitude of configurations at The Stone.

Additionally, members of Estradasphere and John Zorn himself ply their trade in recurring fashion.

I’m unable to comment on rest of the certainly-worthwhile-to-witness artists slated to appear, as the aforementioned were all that I recognized.

If you live in proximity, let there be no excuse to miss out.

Additional Note: This weekend is a fine example of the performances at The Stone. Tonight you can catch Carla Kihlstedt and tomorrow night, Secret Chiefs 3 will play John Zorn’s Book of Angels.
